It’s only a stereotype that Slovenians are reserved and impolite.

“If you go abroad, you become a harmonious mixture of two cultures. You cannot just simply leave your past and descent behind you. We too are concerned about what is happening in Argentina because we were born there. That is why we would like for young emigrants to teach their children Slovenian, create Slovenian associations and spread Slovenian culture,” says Pavlinka Korošec Kocmur, an Argentinian Slovenian and one of the founders of Slovenia in the World association.

Radgonskem kotu, v vaseh ob avstrijski Radgoni.

SLOVENIANS IN AUSTRIAN STYRIA

You have to have a friend!

At the traditional June gathering, The Pavlova Hiša mixed choir from Potrna/Laafeld sang Moraš imeti prijatelja!, which could be translated as You have to have a friend! Every year, Slovenians in Austrian federal state of Styria have more friends from both sides, Slovenian and Austrian, and, somebody who is not familiar with the situation might find it unusual, Slovenian- and German-speaking locals also started attending the events. Most of the Slovenian population lives in the so-called Radgonski Kot area, in the villages near the Austrian Radgona/Bad Radkersburg.

SLOVENSKA KUHINJA

Gorenjski medenjaki

SLOVENIAN CUISINE

Upper Carniolan gingerbread cookies

Slovenians have always been a nation of beekeepers and honey lovers. We are the only European Union member country that protected its indigenous bee, which means that it is not allowed to breed bees of other races here. Honey is present in Slovenian home cooking and it is most frequently used in biscuits and desserts. One of them would be the well-known Upper Carniolan gingerbread cookies with their distinctive taste and shape that are among the best home-baked goods.
